This summer we had the joy of taking two groups of children away on Kidz Klub camps. Kidz Klub camps provide precious time away from the daily pressures of inner-city life for children who normally would not have a holiday. The children benefit from more focused time with the Kidz Klub Leaders, they make new friends, experience new things, face and conquer fears, and most importantly have a lot of fun! This year’s camps were both a time of first experiences for the children.
The first camp, run in conjunction with the Leeds Space Network, coincided with Le Tour de France passing through Yorkshire. We spent a day in the Yorkshire Dales soaking in the atmosphere of Le Tour and watching the cyclists hurtle past at great speed! A once in a life-time opportunity. The rest of the weekend brought with it more fun and excitement; friendships were formed and fears were conquered as the children scaled heights, did the leap of faith, zip-wired across the river Swale and chatted around the campfire. All of this contributed to a fantastic weekend and, surprisingly, for many of the children the weekend was their first experience of the Yorkshire Dales. It was a joy watching the children marvel at the beauty that surrounded them for the first time. One boy commented, “I’m going to remember this weekend for the rest of my life!”
Our second camp again brought with it more new experiences. We went camping with 11 children and 2 of our young leaders to the Elim Festival on the edge of the North York Moors. For most of the children it was their first experience of camping and their excitement was evident (especially at night time!). The children soon became known across the campsite for their loud, joyful singing of Kidz Klub songs as they did the washing up!! The children all came from different schools and different areas of the city but they quickly formed great friendships and were able to be themselves, laugh, and have fun together. The two young leaders who came were previously Kidz Klub children who have returned to Kidz Klub as young leaders to invest in the lives of younger children from their communities because they want others to have the same experiences and opportunities that they have had through Kidz Klub. Although just 12 and 13 years old they were an incredible help and were very concious of looking out for the younger children. Kidz Klub is all about empowering children and young people to be agents of change in their communities and it is exciting to see this in action.
This year’s camps have been marked by laughter, new friendships, new experiences and joy.
